I spent four years within the world of Yum! (all four with Pizza Hut), so I'm very familiar with the culture, the extreme focus on people capability and the company's success in China (India is the next big market). Lots of thoughts and lots of opinions on this subject (probably best shared over a cold beer), but I can testify that talent is a powerful and driving force, at least within Yum! From a people process standpoint, I've never seen anything quite like it.

Steve comments on Some applicants ARE awesome and can do lots of pull-ups

Richard - yep, I have to admit the Linsanity is almost all-encompassing. But I appreciate your take on this as well. I suspect that the pile-on after the fact going public was not intended or planned, but it still does not excuse some of the comments. I like your analogy of the private club that works hard to keep its membership 'correct'. Definitely something to think about. And no, I bet Main St has more 2X guys, but there are not many of them to be found anywhere really.

Richard Schad comments on Some applicants ARE awesome and can do lots of pull-ups

First, I am amazed that it took you so long to highlight the cover letter in this space. My hypothesis for the delay is that you were lost in the Linsanity haze.
Beyond that, it was interesting and a bit humorous to read the letter. While I am not sure I'd give the candidate an interview; I do find the aloof commentators much less attractive both as potential employees and more generally as human beings. Clearly their response to the guy sounds a lot like, "No thanks, you don't have what it takes to be in the 1%." Which makes me think, as a percentage of population, do you think Wall Street has as many 2X body weight bench pressers as Main Street?

adeel comments on How much does the office furniture matter?

This office furniture blog truly interactive. I knew that some smart commenter would make that point! I think you are right and I guess the overall point might be that all three - culture, strategy, talent have their role and influence over outcomes. I think the concept is brilliant. Sort of reminds me of the "Make Me Move" feature on Zillow.com, the real estate site. There's always been this dance (for lack of a better word) that happens between job seekers and recruiters, and sometimes neither one is entirely upfront about their motives or where they want the conversation to lead. A site like this allows job seekers to cut right to the chase and proclaim a) their interest in making a move, b) the parameters of their search and c) maintain anonymity. Brilliant.

Seth
