#HRHappyHour Show Update - Summer Hours

Quick update for listeners of the HR Happy Hour Show, the weekly internet radio show and podcast on Human Resources, talent management, recruiting, workplace technology, and the HR marketplace that I have been hosting for the last 3 years or so. The show, normally broadcasts live via BlogTalkRadio at 8:00PM ET every Thursday, and to date we have done 144 shows covering anything and everything related to the world of work and the practice of people management.

After 144 shows, and in light of an upcoming really busy personal, work, and travel schedule the rest of this month, and quite honestly for me to take some time to think about the show, and consider how I'd like to see it evolve in the future, I am putting the show on 'summer hours' until the Fall.

Specifically, I plan on doing new and live shows only on the first Thursday of each month for the summer months, (June, July, August), with the plan to re-launch the show again in September 2012, perhaps looking and feeling a little bit different than it has been up to this point. The next live show will take place on Thursday, June 7, 2012, and will feature a few long-time friends and former guests and will definitely be one to make sure you catch live.

I plan on using this little break from producing live shows every Thursday night to figuring out what I'd like to see happen with the show in the Fall, to sitting in airport lounges waiting to catch flights, and to spend the occasional couple of hours tending my barbecue. I will probably re-play some of the past shows in the Thursday 8PM time slot, in case anyone would like to get caught up on some shows they have missed during the show's run.

I still like doing the show, it is still fun and informative to get a chance to talk with and learn from our guests, callers, and listeners, and I do plan on coming back strong, (if in a slightly different format), in the Fall.

Many, many thanks to the long-time friends and fans of the show and I look forward to playing my small part in adding to the conversations around HR, talent, people, and the workplace in the months to come.

So to sum it up - catch the next live HR Happy Hour Show on Thursday, June 7, 2012, and then look for new live shows the first Thursday of the month for the balance of the Summer. As I sort out the ongoing plans and schedules, I will be sure to update this blog, Twitter, the HR Happy Hour Facebook page, and the HR Happy Hour LinkedIn group.

This week on the show social media employment law expert Eric Meyer makes a return to the HR Happy Hour to talk about the evolving and important topic of the company use of social media, social networking in the organization, and the law.

Since the last time Eric was on the show a couple of years back several significant changes have occurred. First off, the use of social media and social networking platforms by organizations has exploded. It used to be clever to see a 'like us on Facebook' in an advertisement, and today fully branded Twitter hashtag campaigns are common. Second, an emerging marketing, branding, and social media and digital ecosystem of new and leading practices has emerged, influencing how organizations are choosing to interact in social media. Third, many individual employees are seeing their personal brands and images bolstered by their use of social media in their job capacity, placing additional pressure on them and on their leaders. And last, more cases, opinions, and rulings related to how employee and employer use, ownership, and policies around social media have been developing in the last few years.

So will all that said, we thought it was time for a little refresher course - to try and get you caught up with what has been happening in the legal world with respect to social media use in the enterprise while you have been busy poking people on Facebook.

This week on the show we welcome a special guest, Julia Gomez, who will be giving the opening keynote at the upcoming ERE Expo in San Diego.

Julia is the Founder of the Brandful Workforce - an organization dedicated to helping corporations involve and leverage their engaged workforce toward more aligned and powerful branding. Prior to founding Brandful Workforce in 2011, Julia was at JetBlue, where she started the JetBlue employee relations department, and later was the Director of the People Analytics & Engagement Division.

We hear and read a lot about companies and organizations that claim that their people are their ‘Number 1 Asset’, but often there is a disconnect between this stated belief or philosophy, and the reality of the organizational experience.

But some companies not only believe that people and their talent represent the organization’s top competitive advantage, they actually act in ways that reinforce that belief and use it to create successful organizations.

JetBlue Airlines is known as one such company, and while our guest Julia was there, she played an integral role in the creation and execution of programs that helped connect people to the mission at JetBlue which has led to some fantastic outcomes.

So tonight we will talk about some of those experiences, as well as get Julia’s ideas about how the lessons learned at JetBlue might have more broad applicability in your organization.

Simulation learning really isn’t new. Remember when you were a child and your favorite response was “I can do it myself!” You then proceeded to copy the actions of the person you found so interesting and so, learned how to accomplish a skill on your own, by doing.

That thought process holds true today. Adults learn best by doing. We learn when we use skills, correctly or incorrectly. We learn when we make mistakes in attempting to solve a problem. We learn when we are faced with a challenge and must involve others in finding the best possible solution.

Simulation learning provides an opportunity to use skills, to make mistakes, to involve others in a safe environment for achieving new abilities. We use real world situations, situations managers might encounter regularly in the work world. We add to those situations new situations that push an individual, that challenge a person, that encourage new ways of thinking.

This week on the show we welcome Kaye Mahon, Partner at Leadership Action Centre, and an expert on simulation and experiential learning to talk about the benefits and opportunities of simulation learning, and how simulation learning can improve outcomes and company culture.

Well 2012 is just getting started and we did not really do a ‘Preview’ type show on the HR Happy Hour - a wider or bigger picture view of the big ideas, trends, challenges, etc. that we see organizations and HR leaders having to deal with and address in 2012. For many organizations 2012 will be a pivotal year. As the US and other economies slowly inch out of the long economic downturn and move back into growth and hopefully hiring mode, leaders and HR professionals might find themselves in a kind of transition period, between the slashing, cutting, and paring down period of recent years to a new phase of opportunity and growth.

Change, growth, and adoption of new technologies is never an easy process, and often a little slower than we might desire. The history of enterprise tech and HR Tech in particular tell an interesting story and provide some important lessons to HR leaders today. Having insight into the past helps us plan for the future.

This week on the show I am pleased to welcome HR industry legend and HCM Fellow at Oracle Row Henson for a conversation about some of these big issues and challenges for HR leaders, as well as what HR leaders should be thinking about in 2012 and beyond.
