This week on the HR Happy Hour Show join host Steve Boese and special guest co-host Fran Melmed as we welcome Shape Up the Nation co-founder Dr. Rajiv Kumar to the show to talk about how taking a more social approach to health and wellness is impacting how organizations think about and deploy organizational wellness initiatives.

We all know that health care costs continue to trend upward, organizations are straining to meet the needs of their employee's medical and benefit costs as well as hold the line on expenses. Increasingly organizations are looking at more innovative and socially oriented approaches to make wellness programs more successful and sticky.

Can adding social components to corporate wellness programs make a difference? How can companies get these programs off the ground? What are some of the keys to success? What are the barriers?

I hope you can join Steve, Fran and Rajiv as we talk about 'Taking Wellness Social'.

Tune in this Thursday night June 23 at 8PM ET!

Preview - Episode 76 - 'Wellness Strikes Back'

HR Happy Hour - Episode 76 - 'Wellness Strikes Back' (subtitle : Why is McRib season the same as Open Enrollment season?)

    Thursday November 18, 2010 - 8PM ET  - Call in 646-378-1086TheMcRib

A couple of months ago we tried the 'wellness' show, but we were beset with a slew of technical problems that more or less ruined the show. It was a spectacular fail.

So after that earlier debacle, we vowed to come back stronger, better, and more prepared for the inevitable 'fail' that will at least attempt to spoil the fun.  No worries, we are going to press on with a resolve that usually I only get from filling up on some tasty barbecue.

But wait, this is the 'wellness' show right?  Why am I talking about McRib and BBQ? Because to me, the two are inexorably tied together.

I want to have McRibs and BBQ.  I don't really feel like being badgered to be more 'well'.  And I really don't feel like being hassled at work about it. Work is hassle enough - now I have to go to the office and get told to stretch, count my cups of veggies, and park farther away?

    That kind of sucks.

But the reality in the US is that health care costs continue to spiral out of control, people are getting fatter by the minute (did I mention the McRib is available for a limited time?), and companies are being forced to find ways to reduce the costs associated with keeping our fat butts upright, and reasonably productive.

So the idea of company promoted and sponsored wellness initiatives seems to be here to stay, or at least until companies decide providing health benefits to employees is really too much of a hassle, and try to pay the government to take care of it all.

On the show we will be joined by experts in all sides of the wellness discussion - design, communication, and socialization.  Fran Melmed, Tanya Barham, and Greg Matthews will be back in the HR Happy Hour hot seat to talk wellness - why we need it, how you design for it, and how you might attempt to get idiots like me to pass on the McRib and have a salad.  Not an easy task.

I hope you can join us for what should be a fun show.

Preview - Episode 66 - 'Wrestling with Wellness'

HR Happy Hour - Episode 66 - 'Wrestling with Wellness'

    Thursday September 23, 2010 - 8PM EDT - Call in 646-378-1086

Subtitle - 'It is quite possible you are too fat to work here'.

You can't swing a cat around the office these days without coming up against some corporate wellness type initiatives.

Whether it is Sally in Accounting handing you a pedometer, a company sponsored Weight Watchers meeting (oddly they are always at lunch time), or the benefits team trying to convince, cajole, or badger you into quitting smoking, twinkies, or sitting on your butt all week.  Wellness in the workplace is a fact of life for many of us now, and for the folks in the organization responsible for keeping the company's benefits costs under control, it is really a serious matter.

But wellness at work is kind of a contradictory concept. We want folks to work like dogs, put in extra hours, fuel up on caffeine to keep going, and often engage in lots of behaviors that are not all the 'well'.  And the idea of an employer monitoring your habits, diet, and really personal affairs does not sit well with many employees.  The last thing we want is for the company or employees to turn into the diet police at work.  But health care costs spiral out of control, and orgs can't continue to bear these increases (and neither can employees).

So where is the happy medium between 'big brother' monitoring and thoughtful, successful, and enlightened wellness programs?

I am not sure, so this week Fran Melmed, Tanya Barham, and Greg Matthews will join us on the show to wrestle with wellness.  I hope you can join us.
