Episode 11 - The Happy Recap

Episode 11 - Talent and Technology

    Friday September 25, 2009 6PM EDT

This was an excellent show, really fun to do 'live' and remote from the offices of technology vendor Halogen Software

We welcomed special guests Donna Ronayne and Sean Conrad from Halogen to talk Talent and Technology.

We dug into some of the key issues that organizations face in managing performance, aligning objectives and goals throughout the organization, and the importance of linking training and development initiatives to performance management. We even got into some discussion on whether traditional performance reviews should be scrapped altogether, since in most organizations managers and employees can't stand them.

We also enjoyed a fine Canadian beer (or two).

Many thanks once again to the great people at Halogen for hosting me all day and for serving on the panel.

Take a listen and let me know what you thought.

Episode 10 - The Happy Recap

    Episode 10 - 'The Job Seeker's Show' - September 18, 2009

This was probably the liveliest and most energetic show yet. We had a great panel, several outstanding calls (including our first call from the UK), and a really active Twitter backchannel on the #HRHappyHour tag.

There was some great conversation; some of the highlights and key pieces of advice from the panel:

Jennifer McClure recommended that job seeker's really focus and target what it is they are after, and what their skills and background are a good fit for

Robin Eads advised job seekers to get their most important qualifications and certifications right to the top of their resumes.

Bill Boorman said to avoid fluff in the CV like 'overviews' and such and focus on the key qualifications that you possess.

Paul DeBettignies asked 'How screwed are job seekers today?' There are so many 'rules' and guidelines to follow,  and it has to be tough with all the online and offline sources of job information.

April Dowling who has been actively hiring for positions in her firm said she only reviews Cover Letters if the resume looks like a good fit for the position.

Lance Haun asked about resume gaps, and expressed concern that some recruiters and hiring managers still are holding resume gaps against candidates

All the panelists agreed that some of the keys in the job search are clarity, focus, and ownership of the process.  You have to 'own' your search, be your own advocate, seek help if you need it, and stay determined.

The show was outstanding, and in fact ran over the one-hour mark, so if you were listening live, you missed the last 10 minutes or so which are included in the archive.

Thanks once again to all the guests, callers, tweeters, and listeners. There was so much to cover, I think we will have to do a follow-up show on the topic soon.
