This was a really interesting and informative show, and I selected it as a 'Best Of' pick from 2010 not just for the content of the show itself, but rather almost any '2011 Predictions' article we see these days talks about the need for organizations to become more connected, more collaborative, and frankly better at using and leveraging the knowledge and ideas of their people.  New technologies, more enlightened leaders, and more adept HR professionals all have important roles to play in transforming organizations into more capable and efficient collaborative enterprises, and for those reasons mainly, I think this show represents well what the HR Happy Hour can do, bring to light an important topic, gather leading experts from around the world, and share and discuss with our listeners and friends.

So we made our selections for the 'Best of 2010' , there are a few other shows that we really enjoyed and I did want to mention them here in the yearly wrap-up post.

Best of the Rest for 2010

Episode 26 - 'The Best HR City' - A really fun show where we tried to determine which city was the 'best' for HR.  Spirited debate, passionate supporters, and in the end, a dominant win for.....

Episode 36 - 'Show Me the Money' - A in-depth look at one of the most fundamental aspects of the HR world, employee compensation.  Super guests, great content, and an interesting show.

Episode 47 - 'HR and Indie Culture' - Another departure from 'traditional' HR topics, but a really interesting look at the world of Indie culture with Kaya Oakes, author of 'Slanted and Enchanted'.  Slanted was my favorite book in 2010, and this was quite possibly my favorite show of the year.

Episode 54 - 'Enterprise 2.0 and HR' - Our initial look at the world of Enterprise collaboration and the role for HR and HR leaders. Andrew McAfee, creator of term Enterprise 2.0 and author of the book 'Enterprise 2.0' joined us for a great look at the role these technologies will play inside organizations.

Episode 72 - 'Fistful of Talent Radio' - It is an honor to be a part of the crew at Fistful of Talent, and even more fun when they come by the HR Happy Hour show.  Great people, interesting takes on recruiting and talent, and a super fun show.

That is just a few of the many shows we really enjoyed this year - but the year is not over just yet, and we have one more offering in 2010!

Tonight 8PM ET - December 30, 2010 - Episode 80 - 'HR Happy New Year'

We will look back on 2010, talk about some of favorite shows and guests, as well as look forward to 2011.  We don't have any 'official' guests booked, so we are relying on the listeners to give us a call and participate tonight.

Thanks so much for all the support and encouragement this year, and I hope you will be with us in 2011 as we keep going with more and hopefully even better show.

Thanks again!

Best of the HR Happy Hour 2010 - Part III

Rolling on with our look back at the highlights of the HR Happy Hour show in 2010 with today's look at the best show from the the 3rd Quarter of 2010. Before we get to that, a recap of the selections so far:

Best of Q1 - Episode 28 -'Chief Culture Officer'

Best of Q2 - Episode 49 - 'The Why of Work'

The pick for today, representing the period of July - September 2010 is  the show from August 19, 2010:

Episode 59 - 'About Your Performance Review' with guest, UCLA Management Professor and author of the book 'Get Rid of the Performance Review', Sam Culbert.

This was an incredibly lively, interesting, and provocative show as Professor Culbert echoed the ideas in 'Get Rid of the Performance Review' on the show.  Simply put, the current practice of performance management and the performance review as conducted by the vast majority of companies and managers is irreparably broken, and needs to be scrapped altogether for the benefit of organizations, managers, and employees. It is one-sided, biased, fails to inspire and improve employee performance, all the while serving as that annual exercise of dread that everyone hates.

Culbert was on fire during the show, and if nothing else, was passionate and committed to his ideas, and didn't really care if you liked them or not.

Personally, this was probably my favorite show of 2010.  Maybe.

Have a listen, or listen again and let us know what you think.

Tomorrow - Best of Q4, 2010 Honorable Mentions, and a preview of this week's 'HR Happy New Year' show.

Best of the HR Happy Hour 2010 - Part II

On this 'not and actual holiday but sort of feels like one week' we are taking a look back at the best HR Happy Hour Shows of 2010.  Yesterday we featured the top choice from Q1 2010 - was from January 28, 2010,  Episode 28 - 'Chief Culture Officer'.

Today we move on to the second quarter of 2010 and the pick for that period is Episode 49 - 'The Why of Work',  a show originally aired June 10, 2010.

The show can be replayed from the show page here - or using the widget player below:

We were pleased and honored to be joined by industry leader and legend Dave Ulrich to talk about his latest book, also titled 'The Why of Work'; and to get a sense of Dave's feeling that work and the workplace can and should aspire to be something more that just a means to earn a paycheck.  That the best managers and leaders find a way to tap into the meaning and purpose that most people are seeking, and to build richer and more powerful environments that support the organization, the community, and the individual.

This show took ages to put together, and we were really pleased and proud of how it turned out.

Have a listen if you missed it, or give it a second playing and let us know what you think.

Tomorrow - the best show from Q3 2010.

Best of the HR Happy Hour 2010 - Part I

As 2010 winds down I thought I would look back on some of the highlights of the HR Happy Hour show  in 2010 to acknowledge and remember some of the great guests and topics we covered this year.

Each day this week we will look back on one of the best or most interesting shows from each quarter of 2010, starting today with Episode 28, a show from January 28, 2010 - 'Chief Culture Officer' with our guest, the author of Chief Culture Officer, Grant McCracken. This was a bit of a departure from the usual 'HR' talk on the show, but I think was one of the best shows of the year.

Listen back to the show from the show page here - or using the widget player below.

This was a really interesting and informative show discussing the importance of the understanding of culture and making meaning from that understanding in a corporate context. Trends, popular culture, patterns in living and working, demographics, all these and more impact the way we live and work, and applying a reasoned and anthropology-based approach in the corporate setting were discussed on the show.

Have a listen if you missed this one, or take a re-listen, and let us know what you think.
