Best of the HR Happy Hour 2010 - Part II

On this 'not and actual holiday but sort of feels like one week' we are taking a look back at the best HR Happy Hour Shows of 2010.  Yesterday we featured the top choice from Q1 2010 - was from January 28, 2010,  Episode 28 - 'Chief Culture Officer'.

Today we move on to the second quarter of 2010 and the pick for that period is Episode 49 - 'The Why of Work',  a show originally aired June 10, 2010.

The show can be replayed from the show page here - or using the widget player below:

We were pleased and honored to be joined by industry leader and legend Dave Ulrich to talk about his latest book, also titled 'The Why of Work'; and to get a sense of Dave's feeling that work and the workplace can and should aspire to be something more that just a means to earn a paycheck.  That the best managers and leaders find a way to tap into the meaning and purpose that most people are seeking, and to build richer and more powerful environments that support the organization, the community, and the individual.

This show took ages to put together, and we were really pleased and proud of how it turned out.

Have a listen if you missed it, or give it a second playing and let us know what you think.

Tomorrow - the best show from Q3 2010.

Best of the HR Happy Hour 2010 - Part I

As 2010 winds down I thought I would look back on some of the highlights of the HR Happy Hour show  in 2010 to acknowledge and remember some of the great guests and topics we covered this year.

Each day this week we will look back on one of the best or most interesting shows from each quarter of 2010, starting today with Episode 28, a show from January 28, 2010 - 'Chief Culture Officer' with our guest, the author of Chief Culture Officer, Grant McCracken. This was a bit of a departure from the usual 'HR' talk on the show, but I think was one of the best shows of the year.

Listen back to the show from the show page here - or using the widget player below.

This was a really interesting and informative show discussing the importance of the understanding of culture and making meaning from that understanding in a corporate context. Trends, popular culture, patterns in living and working, demographics, all these and more impact the way we live and work, and applying a reasoned and anthropology-based approach in the corporate setting were discussed on the show.

Have a listen if you missed this one, or take a re-listen, and let us know what you think.

HR Happy Hour - Episode 79 - 'New Communities'

'Community' might rival 'transparency' and 'engagement' as one of the most often repeated, and potentially misunderstood terms of the social networking age. 'Communities', especially online ones, take many forms, have a wide variety of platforms, and operate in so many different ways that it might be said that every community, be it a customer community, an employee community, or even the greater collection of people living in a city or supporting a cause, has it's own unique and distinct characteristics, needs, and benefits.

With so many companies and HR organizations grappling the diverse and complex concepts of 'community', we thought it time to talk about communities, community management, and some of the ways organizations can extract the most value out of their supported communities, while simultaneously contributing to the community goals.

Our guests will be Teresa Basich, Community Manager for Radian6, and two great guests from Kodak, Chief Blogger Jenny Cisney, and Community Manager Shruti Goradia. I hope you can join us for a fun and interesting discussion on community and community management in this, the age of social networking.

You might have heard of a little company called Zappos.  An online shoe and apparel retailer that decided their main mission wasn't really selling shoes, but rather to provide incredible, almost incomprehensibly great customer service.

And by focusing on service over everything else. Zappos has become one of the most interesting and compelling business stories of the last ten years.

Zappos is not just renowned for customer service, they are also known for their comprehensive and all encompassing focus on their unique corporate culture.  They hire for cultural fit, train and develop and promote according to their deeply held cultural beliefs, and value culture even more than technical ability.

Truly, Zappos is an amazing story, and while you may be familiar from books, presentations, blog posts and the like, all about the Zappos story, chances are you have never really had a close look behind the curtain.  Well, tonight on the HR Happy Hour show you get your chance to hear from, and ask questions to one of the HR and Talent Management leaders at Zappos, Cruise Ship Captain Jamie Naughton.

What does a Cruise Ship Director do?  How can Zappos feed and maintain its legendary culture?  How can you learn from the Zappos story and try and make your organization more like them?  All these questions and more will be answered on the show.

You have read the book.  You know the stories.  You ordered the shoes.  Now learn more about the Zappos story.

I hope you can join us for what should be a great show.
