Preview - Episode 49 - 'The Why of Work'

HR Happy Hour - Episode 49 - 'The Why of Work'

    Thursday June 10, 2010  8PM EDT

    Call in 646-378-1086

The HR Happy Hour show is excited to welcome Professor and author Dave Ulrich to talk about 'The Why of Work', Dave's latest book that he co-authored with Wendy Ulrich.

Work can and should be more than simply a place we go, do our time, collect a paycheck, and go home.  It should be a place that challenges, motivates, and inspires.  A place where we find and create meaning, where we connect with and are supported by our leaders and colleagues to elevate 'work' to something more important and lasting than in the past.

We will talk with Dave about the major themes and ideas of 'The Why of Work', how to create more abundant organizations, how to connect people with jobs that they will find more fulfilling, how organizations can and should seek to become 'meaning making' as well as money making enterprises, and some of the practical and actionable strategies leaders and organizations can employ to become more abundant, and more successful in their markets and communities.

I hope you can join us this week for what should be an interesting and informative show.

    Preview - Episode 46 - 'Making Work/Life Work'

HR Happy Hour - Episode 46 - 'Making Work/Life Work'

    Thursday May 20, 2010 8PM EDT

    Call in number - 646-378-1086

It is one thing to talk about workplace flexibility, and quite another to design and implement flexible working strategies in organizations, and to measure their effectiveness and impact on the bottom line.

Sure, most employees might prefer to work at home in their jammies, but does it make sense for the organization?

While most of us would agree that more flexibility in the design of  jobs is desirable or 'better', often HR professionals have difficulty understanding how to design more flexible workplaces, to develop flexibility strategies that will work for the organization, and to even understand their important role in this area. Joining us will be Cali Yost, of the FlexStrategy Group and WorkLife Fit, Inc., writer at Fast Company, and an expert on workplace flexibility, to talk about how to move Work/Life from discussion to action, and how HR professionals can be better equipped to lead and support these important initiatives in their organizations.

I hope you can join us for what should be an interesting and informative show where we try and take the Work/Life discussion beyond 'should' and get closer to 'how'.

Preview - Episode 45 - 'Social Recruiting, Sports, and Upside'

    Make that Tremendous Upside.

Everywhere I look, I see upside Everywhere I look, I see upside

This week on the HR Happy Hour show we will talk sports.  I know, I hear the collective groan from the audience.  Sports? Again?

    Well, yes.

HR Happy Hour - Episode 45 - 'Social Recruiting, Sports, and Upside' - Thursday May 13, 2010 8PM EDT  - Call in 646-378-1086

Sports are a perfect forum for the analysis, dissection, and perhaps even better understanding of all things talent.  From talent assessment in the form of scouting and drafting, to training and development in the college ranks and minor leagues, to dealing with the intricacies of team and organizational dynamics with stars, role players, ans the constant pressure of balancing team and individual goals, sports has everything an HR or Talent pro could ask for. Besides, what is more fun that a bunch of friends sitting around talking about sports?

A guess a bunch of friends sitting around talking about sports in Las Vegas.  But we will get to that.

We will also talk about the upcoming Social Recruiting Summit (a Summit? Sounds big-timey), set for May 17, 2010 in Minneapolis. Maybe while the boys are in Minny, they can get KG and Stephon reunited.

Joining us will be Kris Dunn, the HR Capitalist and the Chair for the Social Recruiting Summit; Lance Haun, Community Director for ERE, Tim Sackett, writer at the Fistful of Talent and big shot in HR and Recruiting, and the Professor, Matt 'akaBruno' Stollak.

It should be a fun show.

    Updates from Show HQ

It has been a while since I gave an update of what has been happening at HR Happy Hour World Headquarters, so I thought a quick rundown of what has been going on, and what is coming up was in order.

    So here we go:

    1. The 'Show Archives' page (a little link on the site header that is cleverly called 'Show Archives') is finally up to date. You can use the Show Archives page to find a link to all of the past shows.  Clicking any individual show link on that page will open a show page that will have some show details, and a little player widget that you can use to listen to the show.

    2. Shauna created a Facebook Fan Page for the HR Happy Hour show.  Thanks Shauna!  If you like please consider becoming a fan.  We will post previews and links to listen to the show there, and you can also submit ideas for guest and topics.  We are always looking for good ideas for future shows.

    3. We have a spiffy new show logo!  Take a look:

    happyhour_logo_vertical1(2)Very slick, don't you think?

    4. We are hoping to take the show 'on the road' in 2010, look for updates here and on the Facebook page as well.  We have a couple of events booked and are always open to discussing how the show can help and add some fun and interest to your event or conference. Let us know if that is something you are interested in.

    5. Next week the show will broadcast live from trulondon2 in London, England.  The specific show date/time has not been set yet, but look for an announcement here soon (and on Twitter/Facebook). Oh yeah, we do have an HR Happy Hour Twitter account as well, please give us a follow!

Lastly, many thanks from Shauna and I for listening, tweeting, supporting and making the show so much fun for us.  Please let us know how we are doing, and what we can do to make the show more interesting and valuable to you.

    See you in London!
